Two People Killed, I-35 Northbound Shut Down After Back-to-Back Crashes Near Temple

TEMPLE, Texas — Two separate crashes early Thursday on Interstate 35 northbound near Temple left two people dead, snarled morning traffic for hours and forced authorities to shut down all northbound lanes as emergency crews worked the scenes, police said.

Multiple Crashes Shut Down I-35

The Temple Police Department confirmed that the first crash occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. near mile marker 298, when a northbound vehicle drove off the roadway and collided with a concrete barrier for reasons still under investigation. A second vehicle then struck the disabled car. One person died as a result of that crash, authorities said.

“The early morning conditions made the scene difficult to navigate,” said a Temple Police spokesperson. “Drivers should always maintain awareness, especially in hours with limited visibility.”

Less than two hours later, at around 5 a.m. near Exit 297, a second collision occurred involving two tractor-trailers in heavy congestion. Police said one truck struck another that had slowed or stopped, and one person in that crash was also pronounced dead.

“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those lost on I-35 this morning,” a Temple Police Department statement read. “These incidents are under active investigation.”

Traffic Disruptions and Response

The combination of crashes led to the closure of all northbound I-35 lanes near Temple, forcing motorists to exit at 6th Avenue and use service roads or seek alternate routes while first responders and investigators worked to clear the highway.

TxDOT traffic maps later showed the closures and delays cleared by mid-afternoon, but significant backups developed during the morning commute.

Officials urged drivers to plan for delays, especially on Interstate 35, which serves as a major north-south artery through Central Texas.

“We know these closures affect people trying to get to work or school,” the police department stated. “We appreciate motorists' patience as we prioritize safety and investigation.”

Investigations Continue

Both crashes remain under investigation by law enforcement. Temple police and state emergency teams are reviewing vehicle movements, crash scene evidence, and any available camera footage to determine causes and contributory factors.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the fatalities, and they did not immediately comment on whether speed, attention, or other factors played a role.

The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Bell County Sheriff's Office are expected to assist in the investigation, with findings and possible charges or citations pending as the case develops.
